On 3rd, Aug., 2019, A man opened fire in an area packed with up to 3,000 people, including many buying back-to-school supplies. Many of the victims were shot at a Walmart supermarket. Shoppers at the Cielo Vista Mall also caught up in the violence. At least 20 people have been killed and two dozen others was injured.

Sergeant Robert Gomez said a man in his 20s had been detained near the mall and police did not fire a shot. He said the gunman used a rifle in the attack.

Two law enforcement officials identified the suspect as 21-year-old Patrick Crusius from the Dallas area, according to US media. It is alleged he had previously written an anti-immigration manifesto.

El Paso police chief Greg Allen said authorities were examining the manifesto which indicated "there is a potential nexus to a hate crime".

Texas governor Greg Abbott confirmed 20 people had died in the attack, saying it was "one of the deadliest days" in the state's history. It is the eighth worst mass shooting in modern US history.

"The scene was a horrific one," said Mr Allen, adding that many of the wounded had life-threatening injuries.
